Business Valuations
Recent court cases have resulted in stricter new Federal Rules of Evidence. These rules are followed by the US Tax Courts, and are increasingly being incorporated by the Massachusetts courts. To qualify as an expert, you need to be able to demonstrate through education, training, and experience that you have the knowledge and competence to value a business enterprise. Valuing a business is far more than putting numbers into a software program: you need to be current on valuation issues, understand the sources and methodologies used, and to be able to explain them clearly and succinctly.
As a Certified Valuation Analyst, I have been designated by the National Association of Certified Valuation Analyst - the largest such association in the United States, as having demonstrated I have the knowledge, experience, and competency to value businesses.
While valuation is not a science, increasingly the courts are calling on experts to support their conclusions with empirical data. While several valuation software programs are available which "do this for you;" unless the valuator understands the sources of the data and how to use them they may find themselves embarrassed should they be called upon to defend their valuation. If you need a business valuation, use an expert. I am committed to providing objective and credible assistance.
